Arrivederci Sicily, Buongiorno Southern Italy

May 11 - May 18 Creating our own 007 adventure in Basilicata (Polignano a Mare)

We began our adventure in the lovely fishing village of Scilla in the area of Calabria.

Calabria is known for its spicy food and also for its amazing swordfish which is in season. We enjoyed watching the fishermen catch the swordfish while we enjoyed our lunch.

We happened to stop in Torre Canne for lunch of “ham and beer”. As you can tell, the proportions were definitely generous and the only question was how to take a bite out of these enormous burgers.

Following an enormous lunch, Stacy had a Goldilocks moment as she decided to try out a chair clearly made for those who eat “ham and beer” regularly.

Terry, on the other hand, decided on a swing chair upon which he could contemplate the meaning of the universe.

Polignano a Mare was our home base and this view from our room gives you a glimpse of the beauty and also showcases the location where the Red Bull cliff diving competitions occur.

Our hotel and this restaurant showcase the surrounding area and the restored cave dwellings that were inhabited for thousands of years.

Stacy grew up signing Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra hits with her dad. Polignano a Mare is the home to the famous Domenico Modugno who wrote Volare, a famous Dean Martin hit and the streets are illuminated each night with the lyrics.

Terry took the time to capture images of the The Super Flower Blood Moon lunar eclipse of 2022 from Italy.

Stacy was disappointed to not visit elephants in Asia as originally planned, but was thrilled to find ways to support their protection while in Italy.

The fresh seafood and fish has been amazing and we are trying new dishes and loving them!

If you have seen No Time to Die (James Bond 007 movie) you will recognize photos from the amazing town of Matera which was used for filming.

Matera is an extraordinary city with ancient cave dwellings called Sassi inhabited since the Paleolithic period. This was a remarkable UNESCO site.

A mechanic at heart, Terry was intent upon unlocking the secrets to this fascinating civilization and city.

Stacy continued to be mesmerized by the churches in Italy and Terry recorded her exploration which resulted in 36 miles of walking this week.
