Spello, Italy

June 2 - 8 Lingering in one of Italy’s most beautiful, unspoiled and less touristy cities with dear friends and making new friendships with phenomenal people.

We were excited to have our friends join us in Spello for what turned out to be one of our favorite cities for so many reasons.

Spello has such a lovely vibe. The streets are gorgeous and the smell of flowers permeates each street and alley. It is easy to feel the love here as it epitomizes la dolce vita visually and through the warmth of its people.

Good friends will follow you anywhere. Our friends navigated planes, trains, automobiles and a funivia to be with us in Spello. We had so much fun together.

On second thought, maybe it wasn’t us that they came for but the amazing gelato available every few meters.

Ahh, popping into shops and looking for Italian linen occupied our time this week.

Spello is known for the beauty of its streets where neighbors showcase beautiful flower plantings, each more stunning than the others.

Enoteca Properzia is one of the top rated Enotecas in the world. We serendipitously found this amazing Enoteca and were charmed by the incredibly warm and welcoming family who adopted us during our time in Spello. Roberto and his son Luca and daughter Irene created an experience of a lifetime for us, not once but on several occasions. On this occasions we experienced wine and food pairings which were heavenly. Looking forward to our wine shipments to the U.S. to share with friends and family soon.

Roberto had a special way of connecting with each person while he shared his favorite wines from Italy.

The warm hugs and interactions brought back so many happy memories of the love that permeated from Stacy’s Italian family growing up. It was a night to be remembered with each of us feeling a special connection with this family.

The charm of these narrow streets, classic European cars and flowers are sheer whimsy, best experienced with those you love.

We also learned a great deal about how to choose the best olive oil and balsamic vinegar during our tastings. Terry has grown to like Bruschetta, well let’s just say he likes Roberto’s bruschetta with the amazing olive oil we sampled. Luckily we have a lot of it coming to California to enjoy.

Terry and Stacy drove to Orvieto to see one of Italy’s great gothic cathedrals and enjoyed an anniversary luncheon in a garden courtyard with a wedding reception ambiance. It was just lovely.

We enjoyed a fun anniversary dinner laughing with friends in a fun Cantina in Spello. Great memories!

Orvieta’s cathedral is one of the most impressive we have experienced while in Italy, and we have seen some impressive churches during our visits.

Lago di Castiglione was an interesting excursion and allowed for exploration of a large medieval fortress with an enclosed tunnel and towers.

We were lucky to be in Spello during the week when families come together to prepare for Le Infiorate di Spello a huge annual event that decorates the streets with flower petals plucked from wild flowers gathered in the mountains and local roses in preparation for the event. Stacy and Toby were welcomed like family into the process and enjoyed birthday cake and limoncello with the family. What a night! We can’t wait to see the pictures of the flower creations from this weekend’s festival.
